How to Care for Your Swim Goggles
No one wants blurred vision racing down the pool. It's important to take a moment to care for your swim goggles regularly. Caring for your goggles doesn't take much effort or time, but can prolong the life and condition of this piece of equipment that's crucial to this sport. Here are some tips on how to prolong the life of your goggles.
In the Pool
A new pair of goggles will usually have an anti-fog coating inside the lens. Swimmers often will rub the inside of their goggles with a finger or towel to prevent fogging on the lens. Be careful! This de-fogging method may cause damage and rub off the coating. If your goggles do become foggy, there are anti-fog sprays and de-fogging solutions that will help keep the lenses clear for your next swim. Simply spray one or two squirts in your goggles before you hop in the pool. Some swimmers even use their tongue (sounds funny, we know!) to clean the lens, which has been known to keep the lenses clearer for longer.
After Your Workout
After swimming make sure to rinse your goggles in cold fresh water. Rinsing off the chlorine and pool chemicals will help prolong the life of your goggles. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight or hot water as this may cause the rubber to melt or screen to crack. Lay them out flat to dry in a cool place. Try to let your goggles dry as much as possible before placing them in your swim bag or towel. The leftover water residue in the goggles might cause bacteria or mold to grow, which can damage the goggles.
For Your Next Swim
Storing your goggles in their protective case prevents scratches and exposure to outside elements. Taking the time to care for your goggles after each swim will help to keep them in pristine condition for many workouts to come.
